Overview

Our tour is unique because it is led by Walangari Karntawarra, an Aboriginal Australian elder, artist, educator and performer who is also a Bondi local. He explains the geological and social history of one of the world’s most iconic locations. He begins and ends each walk with a didgeridoo performance. Walangari shows ancient Aboriginal rock carvings and explains their meanings. He also identifies Aboriginal bush foods and medicines still growing along the route. Walkers have the opportunity to ask questions about the world's oldest living culture and there is an audio transmitter for a translator or group leader, if required. Groups can be up to a maximum of 38 walkers. When booking they have the option of finishing the walk with an exciting, interactive cultural performance by Diramu Aboriginal Dance and Didgeridoo, for an additional fee.

What To Expect

Bondi Beach
Our tour begins at the North Bondi Golf Club, on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Bondi Beach. Our route takes us past Ben Buckler Gun Battery, a heritage-listed fortified former gun emplacement, named after a local bushranger who lived in a cave nearby. Walangari points out examples of art deco architecture. On route, the group takes in the sights and sounds of beautiful Bondi Beach.

During this gentle, downhill walk you’ll see ancient Aboriginal Rock Carvings and traditional Aboriginal bush foods and medicines still growing wild in this beautiful coastal locale. An additional tour operator transmitter is available for use by your group leader or translator, if required

All tours finish at the beautiful Bondi Pavilion, at Bondi Beach with a didgeridoo performance.

Option of finishing the tour with a traditional Aboriginal cultural performance by Diramu Aboriginal Dance and Didgeridoo, with audience participation in a dance.

Walangari Karntawarra's Bondi Aboriginal Walking Tour

We thoroughly enjoyed this walking tour. Our elderly parents didn’t find the down hill walk too taxing and we had the added bonus of being able to translate things for them via the translator headsets, which made it easy for everybody to hear our guides fascinating commentary and ask questions. The optional Aboriginal cultural performance by Diramu Aboriginal Dance and Didgeridoo, on the beach at the end of the tour was such fun most of our group danced with them. It was a great experience.
Eye opening tour of Bondi's Aboriginal History

Walangari is a charismatic speaker with fascinating stories to tell. His topics included the formation of and changes to our coastline over the ages; his own aboriginal family history (with an Afghan forbear!) in central Australia; early cultural exchanges with people visiting from Egypt and South America and dot painting being the result of desert Aborigines creating art as seen from the sky. His varied demonstrations of plant uses were informative and entertaining, surprising us with the comforting fragrance of willow tree leaves rubbed between our hands!

Walangari really does offer a worthwhile tour and his audio equipment saved us from straining to hear, especially with the backdrop of passing buses and lorries.

Really interesting walk with Walangari on his Bondi Aboriginal Walking Tour. Our group was all ages and we got to ask questions and learn things about Bondi’s ancient and modern history. Made me want to move there. The cultural performance by Diramu Aboriginal Dance and Didgeridoo that we booked at the end of the tour was amazing. I highly recommend this tour and optional performance to local and visitors alike.
